Daily Ways to Nurture Yourself and Peace of Mind (Part 1 of 3)

    By Denise Michaels

An online friend of mine mentioned the other day that she was feeling blue. It happens. In addition to being a good listener I made a list of things we can do as women over 40 to feel better about ourselves, our circumstances and our world. I believe it’s important to
start doing little things to take care of yourself - especially in the midst of whatever is going on around you. Little rituals can help us in amazing ways.

Self-care is so important. Yet as women we often take care of everyone else and think we are selfish or self-absorbed if we do anything to take care of ourselves. We can be much better as a support for others if we take care of ourselves first. Remember, before flying on a plane when they give emergency instructions they say, “Always put your own air mask on before helping others.

Think about what would feel nurturing to you and what would cause others to treat you the way you deserve to be treated as an intelligent, caring woman. I try to think of ways to nurture myself without turning to food - of course unless it's mealtime.

Make a list of things you can do that make you feel nurtured during times of stress. Here are a few that I enjoy - your list will probably be different.

Call a friend on the phone

Go for a twenty minute brisk walk

Curl up on the bed and watch TV for an hour

    Go get a manicure

Go to a well-to-do place - my favorite is a fancy hotel lobby - dress nicely so you fit in - sit, watch people a bit and write. Cost = zero. Order a cup of tea or a lemonade if a waiter comes by. Act as if you belong there.
